Organization – Organization is a long running experimental techno project headed by Transonic Records founder Kazunao Nagata, active since the late 80s. Its output has been a mix of styles ranging from synth pop, techno, ambient and acid house showcased on one of Transonic’s last releases “Organization - Anthology 1988-1995”. Its acid house sound was revived in 2011’s “*” on ExT Recordings featuring classic tracks and remix from Yoshinori Sunahara (ex Denki Groove), along with live performances across Japan.

Palomatic – Palomatic is an alias of Koji Takahashi, who was active in the growing techno scene in Japan in the early 90s as a synth programmer and member of Denki Groove, as well as a member of Takahashi Tektronix and Mutron. His work on Transonic Records as Palomatic has become a hidden gem for many fans of techno and trance in the west thanks to his full-length album “Trill” in 1995 and features on Transonic compilations becoming popular online and being digitally re-released as part of the “Transonic Data Archives” in 2011.

Suzukiski – Takahiro Suzuki aka Suzukiski is a prolific artist from Japan who first appeared on Transonic Records in 1993 with his track “When Tomorrow Comes” on Transonic 3 (Range) in 1993. He would go on to contribute to more Transonic compilations, as well as compilations for Nan Records before releasing two full length albums on Transonic, first “Waiting” in 1995 followed by “Kamakura” in 1996 on the sub label Zero Gravity. After being a member of Fantastic Explosion with Transonic label founder Kazunao Nagata for the group’s first album, he would go on to release numerous albums on the label Soup Disk through out the mid-90s to early 00s.

Interferon – Interferon is one of the many aliases of Kiyoshi Hazemoto, a veteran of the Japanese techno scene. Releasing works as part of the duo PC-8, later releasing tracks on Trigger Label in the late 80s/early 90s he would go on to release works on Transonic Records as Interferon. His album “Seance-Room Music” has become a sought-after album among collectors, and he still releases music currently as Sigh Society and as a member of Space Designer on Fantas-Tech Records.

Mind Design – Mind Design is a duo consisting of Koji Sakurai and Tomonori Sawda (aka Unreal) who released many classic techno tracks on Trigger Label which would later become Transonic Records. Their work continued on Transonic, including the 1994 album “View From The Edge” as well as features on Syzygy, Frogman Records and US based Generator Records. The duo would go on to work together as composers for various projects for Sega and Taito Corp.

about

SAISEI founder Junki Inoue continues his vital archival work uncovering the riches of Japan’s distinctive electronic music scene and bringing them to new audiences around the world. The Sounds Of Transonic compiles six tracks recorded in Tokyo between 1991 and 1995 and released by the pioneering Transonic label, founded in 1994 by Kazunao Nagata and active until 2004.

Transonic’s catalogue is a glittering roll call of the scene’s major players, whose inventive and genre-blending work established forward-thinking house and techno in Japan in a way that would shape the country’s electronic sound for years to come. Transonic was instrumental in giving exposure to the work of these artists with its emblematic series of CD compilations, released over a short couple of years in the mid 90s. Beginning with 970-1450km/h, Feedback and Range, the series also included The Roots Of Transonic, featuring music from parent label Trigger. Alongside these compilations came much sought-after solo albums each packaged with striking cover art that makes the discs a visual treat for collectors to this day.

The Sounds Of Transonic brings together six tracks from the catalogue into one breath-taking pack- age. The influence of hi-tech jazz and machine funk from Detroit is undeniable in ‘Dream Trance’ (Mind Design) and ‘Blasting Soul’ (Interferon), while ‘Under The Ground’ (Palomatic) and ‘Chelsea’ (Suzukiski) are permeated by the artificial intelligence and trip hop emanating from the UK at the time. The compilation is bookended by two tracks by Nagata himself (as Organization): ‘Space Ball’, a Model 500-worthy chase through the cosmos, and ‘Call’, an eerie echo of Kraftwerk’s telephone, transmitting expectantly out into the void and, finally, receiving its celestial answer.
With The Sounds Of Transonic these formative pieces of music will now be available internationally and, for the first time, on vinyl.
